In short: In choice filling you list colleges and courses in your true order of preference, and the system allots the highest choice your rank, category and quota can reach. Order by genuine preference — not by "safety" — add enough realistic and safe options, and lock before the deadline. The order, not the number, is what matters most.

What is NEET choice filling?

Choice filling is the counselling stage where you select the colleges and courses (MBBS, BDS, and where relevant BAMS/BHMS etc.) you are willing to join, arranged in your order of preference. During seat allotment, the system scans your locked list from top to bottom and gives you the first choice your All India Rank, category and quota can secure. Everything below that is ignored for that round.

Because allotment always starts from your highest preference, the single most important thing is the order of your list — get that right and you cannot be "under-allotted" from the options you listed.

How to fill and lock choices — step by step

Build your college list firstBefore the window opens, prepare a ranked shortlist using previous-year closing ranks for your category and quota. Our college predictor helps here.
Add choices in the portalLog in during the choice-filling window and add every college-and-course option you would consider.
Order by genuine preferencePut the option you most want at the top, then descending. Never place a college you would not join above one you would.

NEET choice-filling strategy (rank and category)

A reliable list mixes three tiers. Use your rank against last year's closing ranks:

Order principles that actually matter

Genuine preference wins. Government colleges usually go above private/deemed for fees, but if a specific private college matters more to you, rank it where you want it.
Course vs college. Decide whether an MBBS seat anywhere beats a BDS seat at a top college, and reflect that consistently in the order.
Category & quota. Fill against your applicable category cutoffs; if you qualify for both AIQ and state, plan lists for each separately.
Don't game the order. Placing a safe option first does not "lock in" a seat — it only wastes your higher preferences.

Choice locking, editing & unlocking

Locking finalises your list for that round. You can freely add, remove and reorder choices until you lock or the window closes. After locking or once allotment runs, changes are not allowed until the next round's fresh choice-filling window.

Lock manually and download the locked-choice confirmation. If you forget, most portals auto-lock the last saved list at the deadline — but a manual lock with proof is always safer.
